July 2016 - Star Trek Beyond, The BFG and more...

Hi guys, and welcome to the middle of the summer! I'm sorry that this post is a little late, but we still have plenty more holiday blockbusters coming out over the next couple of weeks and a few more smaller films as well.

As usual, there is more than one movie that I really want to see before the end of the month but my most anticipated movie of those released over the next two weeks, and therefore I have chosen as Movie of the Month, is the third film from the newly-rebooted Star Trek franchise, Star Trek Beyond. This time, Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto) and the rest of the Enterprise's crew face being stranded on a strange planet after travelling further into uncharted space than ever before when their ship is attacked by an unknown alien species. Now they must battle an enemy stronger than any previous foe as they also try to find a route off of this new world.

Almost a decade after discovering his true identity, Jason Bourne (Matt Damon) is back, but now he has gone off the grid. Some unexpected events, involving former associate Nicky Parsons (Julia Stiles) force him to come out into the open and embark on an exciting global journey that involves a car chase in Las Vegas and a riot in Greece, but the jouney may also lead to more important discoveries about his identity.

The only live-action comedy in this list is Keanu. Clarence (Keegan-Michael Key) and Rell (Jordan Peele) are cousins and when Rell's kitten, Keanu, is catnapped the far from streetwise pair must impersonate ruthless killers in order to infiltrate a street gang and retrieve the purloined feline.  But the incredibly adorable kitten becomes so coveted that the fight over his custody creates a gang war, forcing our two unwitting heroes to take the law into their own hands.

There are three animated films to be released before the end of the month. The first, and arguably the biggest, is the eagerly anticipated Finding Dory, the the very late sequel to the 2003 film Finding Nemo and although being released thirteen years after the first film, this one is set less than a year later. After recalling memories of her family, the forgetful fish (Ellen DeGeneres) sets out on a journey with Marlin (Albert Brooks) and Nemo (Hayden Rolence) which takes them to the Californian coast but when she is captured and taken to the Monterey Marine Life Institute, she must find a way back into the "big blue", with the help of new creatures she meets including octopus Hank (Ed O’Neill) and whale shark Destiny (Kaitlyn Olson).

The BFG is based on the Roald Dahl tale of the same name and sees the imaginative orphan named Sophie (Ruby Barnhill) taken of an adventure by the "big friendly giant" (Mark Rylance), whose job it is to collect, catalogue and deliver pleasant dreams to children. They visit Giant Country where Sophie learns that not all "monsters" are scary, but when they meet a group of evil giants who have a very different plan for the sleeping children, the two new friends must save the children from becoming the not-so-nice giants next meal.

The third film is the fifth installment of the Ice Age franchise, Collision Course, which was released at the start of July but wasn't mentioned in the previous post. Scrat's never-ending pursuit for that elusive acorn takes him further than ever before as he is launched into outer space but this constant quest causes a chain reaction that threatens all life on Earth. Manny (Ray Romano), Diego (Denis Leary) and Ellie (Queen Latifah) and the rest of the herd must leave their home and head off on another adventure, meeting new friends along the way, in order to save the Earth from destruction on a meteoric scale.

The final two films look very interesting but unfortunately aren't available in UK. Equals, the first film, seems to be due for release in every country except for the UK and is a futuristic Romeo and Juliet story in which people live in an emotionless society, with emotions having being supressed through genetic modification. Occasionally the suppression fails and emotions return, this is known as Switched On Syndrome, or SOS and "sufferers" of this illness are heavily medicated or can dissappear after being sent to the "Den". Silas (Nicholas Hoult) is experiencing this awakening and feels strangely drawn to colleague Nia (Kristen Stewart), who is also hiding her own SOS symptoms and as they try to suppress their feelings, their attraction only growns stronger.

Indignation is a story that follows Marcus Messner (Logan Lerman), a young, Jewish atheist who attends college in 1951 in an attempt to avoid enlistment for the Korean War, not knowing that it was a Christian college that requires attendance at church at least ten times a year in order to graduate. Once at the university, the self-proclaimed atheist clashes with the already-established social order, but when Marcus notices gorgeous and alluring fellow student, Olivia Hutton (Sarah Gadon), he is distracted and the pair end up going out on a date but he gets more than he anticipated when Olivia turns out to be more forthcoming than he expected on the way back from their date.

July 2016 - Ghostbusters, Colonia and more...

Hey guys! It's now July and we have a lot more blockbusters and big name movies coming out of the next couple out weeks (and we'll have more over the next couple of months), so there will be something for everyone.

There are a few films, over the next couple weeks, that stand out amongst the rest for me but I have chosen The Legend of Tarzan as Movie of the Fortnight as seems it like the movie will be an interesting and fresh take on the Tarzan story. Based of the fictional story of a boy who was raised in the jungle by great apes, this film tells the tale of an adult Tarzan (Alexander Skarsgård) who is now living in the UK with his wife, Jane (Margot Robbie). When Tarzan, now known as John Clayton III, Lord Greystoke, is invited back to The Congo to act as a trade emisary, he becomes entangled in a murderous plot of greed and revenge but those involved have no idea what they have started.

The retelling of another well-known story, this time in the form a film franchise reboot is Ghostbusters. This time, Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy play a pair of unheralded authors who write a book that posits the reality of ghosts. A few years later, Erin Gilbert (Kristen Wiig) lands a teaching position at Columbia University (similar to the original film), that is until her book resurfaces and she is laughed out of academia. Erin and Abby Yates (Melissa McCarthy) reunite and are joined by the two other proton pack-packing phantom wranglers and Erin has the chance to get some sweet revenge when ghosts invade Manhattan and the ghostbusting team have to save the world.

The second film in the Now You See Me franchise, The Second Act, is also released next week. A year after outwitting the FBI, Danny (Jesse Eisenberg), Merritt (Woody Harrelson) and Jack (Dave Franco) return as three of the Four Horseman and now they are joined by Lula (Lizzy Caplan), replacing former member, Henley (Isla Fisher). The illusionists are back to expose the unethical practices of tech magnate Owen Case (Ben Lamb) but the heist is interrupted, the Horsemen are captured and are conscripted by Walter Mabry (Daniel Radcliffe), a rival tech prodigy who threatens the Horsemen into pulling off their most impossible heist yet. Their only hope is to perform one last unprecedented stunt to clear their names and reveal the architect behind it all.

Set in Chile during military coup of 1973, Colonia is based on the true story of Lena's (Emma Watson) desperate search for her boyfriend, Daniel (Daniel Brühl), who has been abducted by Pinochet's secret police. Lena tracks him to a sealed off area of the country called Colonia Dignidad which, although from the outside it appears to be a charitable mission run by preacher Paul Schäfer, is actually a place nobody ever escaped from so Lena decides to join the cult in order to find Daniel.

Dwanye Johnson and Kevin Hart star in the action-packed comedy, Central Intelligence, which sees Bob Stone (Johnson), a one-time bullied geek and now a CIA agent returns home for a high school reunion. There he meets former "big man on campus" and now an accountant, Calvin Joyner (Hart), and enlists his help whilst claiming to be on a top-secret case. Before the Calvin realises what he's gotten himself into, his unpredictable new friend takes him through a world of shoot-outs, double-crosses and espionage that could get him killed in a multitude of way.

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie is the big screen debut of Edina Monsoon (Jennifer Saunders) and Patsy Stone who are still loving the glamourous high-life - shopping, drinking and partying around London's trendiest hotspots but when they accidently push Kate Moss into the River Thames at a fashionable launch party, the two decide to escape from the UK and move to the French Riviera after becoming embroiled in the relentless media storm surrounding the supermodel's untimely demise. In the glamourous playground of the rich and famous, the penniless pair hatch a plan to ensure they can stay permanently in the south of France whilst still living the high-life.

The only romantic comedy on this list is Maggie's Plan. This film is a modern, witty take on the genre in which titular character, Maggie (Freta Gerwig) is a young and vibrant but single New Yorker who wants a child of her own. When she meets "ficto-critical anthropologist" and struggling novelist, John Harding, she falls in love and adjusts her plans but there is one problem - he is still married, however strained the marriage may be. Whilst best friends Tony and Felicia watch from the side-lines, Maggie creates a new plan that throws her into a love triangle with John and his wife, Georgette (Julianne Moore) and Maggie learns that destiny should be left to play out as intended.

The final film is very intriguing but is unfortunately only available in the USA, at least for the foreseeable future. Swiss Army Man is a very marmite type of film as not everyone is going to like this but I think it is worth a watch. In the film, Hank (Paul Dano) is stranded on a deserted island and as he prepares to leave this world, he spots a man laying by the shore although unfortunately he is dead and quite flatulent. With the help of the dead man, named Manny (Daniel Radcliffe), Hank uses his flatulence to return to the mainland but now he finds himself lost in the wilderness but does not leave Manny behind.
