August 2016 - Suicide Squad, Pete's Dragon and more...

Hey guys! I'm not really sure why I say "Hi" as I doubt anyone really reads this but I keep writing for my love of movies. Anyway, August is here so here is a round-up of cinema releases over this week and the next.

My most anticipated movie this fortnight is probably the most anticipated movie for most people this month, and maybe even the whole summer. Suicide Squad is the third movie of the relatively new DC Extended Universe, after Man of Steel (2013) and Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), but is expected to be the biggest film so far from the newly formed cinematic universe. The film focuses of a group of dangerous super villains, with nothing to lose, who U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) has gathered in order to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. Once the group realise they were chosen only for their patent culpability after their inevitable failure, are the new Suicide Squad continue on the mission they were tasked with, or will they decide that is every bad guy for themselves?

Another film released on Friday is a The Carer. In this film about perseverance through illness, Sir Michael Gifford (Brian Cox) is a terminally ill theatrical legend and Dorottya (Coco König) is another in a long line of badly treated caregivers. Both have their faults; Michael is irascible and foul-mouthed whilst Dorottya secretly took the job in the hope of becoming an acting pupil of Michael's. When a mutual love of Shakespeare is revealed, Michael mellows out and Dorottya loses her selfish ambitions but after being persuaded to accept a Lifetime Achievement Award, their relationship is damaged however the two are able to come together and go to the Awards Ceremony together but is this decision a mistake?

The final release of the week, Up For Love, is a French language film about the relationship that forms between an unusual pair. Diane (Virginie Efira), a successful lawyer, is in the process of breaking of breaking up with her husband and after an angry meal between the two, she storms out of the restaurant and leaves phone behind. When she receives a call from Alexandre (Jean Dujardin), who found the phone and agrees to meet to return the phone, she is in for a surprise. Alexandre is just 4ft 5in tall. She’s charmed by his zest for life and generosity but as their relationship develops, other people’s attitudes towards his stature – and her own reaction to them – become more problematic.

The Idol is another foreign language film - this time, Arabic. The film tells the story real-life story of Mohammed Asaaf (Tawfeek Barhom), a young Palestinian contestant and eventual winner of Arab Idol in 2013, the Middle Eastern version of American Idol. As a ten year-old, Asaaf (Qais Atallah) and his sister Nour (Hiba Atallah) are obsessed with music and start a band with friends Ashraf (Ahmed Qassim) and Omar (Abdelkarim Abu Baraka). When Mohammed sees the auditions for Arab Idol on television, he decides to escape the Gaza borders, travel to Egypt and audition in front of the judges in Cairo. From there, his destiny awaits and he has the chance to not only change his life but also igve a voiceless people the greatest feeling of all: the freedom to love, live and feel free.

The remake of the 1977 Disney classic, Pete's Dragon follows a similar storyline to the original film but this fantasy adventure is now no longer a musical movie. When forest ranger Grace (Bryce Dallas Howard) finds a mysterious ten year-old boy she found living alone in the woods, he claims to have lived there for six years with a green dragon named Elliot. From Pete's (Oakes Fegley) description, Elliot seems to be strangely similar to the stories that old wood carver and Grace's father, Mr. Meacham (Robert Redford), used to tell. With the help of eleven year-old Natalie (Oona Laurence) and her father, Grace sets out to discover the truth about Pete and his dragon before Natalie's uncle, Gavin (Karl Urban), can capture the gentle giant.

Based on an unbelievably true story, Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates is a clever but raunchy comedy about two brothers, Mike (Adam Devine) and Dave (Zac Efron) Stangle, whose sister is about to be married and she has one demand; that they both bring dates, to stop them hitting on every woman there. Their nationwide search, using platforms including Youtube and The Wendy Williams Show, ends when Alice (Anna Kendrick) and Tatiana (Aubrey Plaza), two disreputable waitresses, "accidently" find them after seeing the brothers on television and decide they could do with a free Hawaiian holiday. Hoping for a wild getaway with the girls, Mike and Dave instead find themselves outsmarted and out-partied by the clever, uncontrollable duo.
